The U-Pu fuel cycle is dominated in nuclear power sector today. Other alternative such as thorium based nuclear fuel should be explored for some distinguished advantages for future. The element thorium is abundant in earth’s crust compared to element uranium by three times and presence is wide spread. But the use of thorium as nuclear fuel is not much popular till today. The Uranium-235, Plutonium-239 is the nuclides of the uranium-based fuel system are on technologically superior compared to Th232. But the thorium-based fuel system, there is lack of suitable technological know-how. Th-232 itself is not a fissile material, but is “fertile” to provide fissile nuclides and energy. The bombardment with neutron, the Th-232 is transmuted to fissile U-233. The thorium fuel based nuclear energy may be promising in future for its non-proliferation character, less radio toxicity and low carbon emission. The nuclear structure of Th-232, Pa-234 and U-233 are examined and illustrated for a theoretical base. The paper will be a value added for sustainable fuel cycles at Global 2026, August 16-20 in Chicago, IL by ANS.
